Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a condition in which arteries become narrow, restricting the blood flow to the legs. PAD can also cause reduced blood flow to other parts of the body including the arms, kidneys ,intestine & brain. The most common cause of peripheral artery disease is the build-up of fatty deposits, called ‘plaque’ on the inside walls of arteries, which restricts blood flow through them. Some less common causes of PAD include blood clots in the arteries, injury to the limbs, and unusual anatomy of the limbs.
There are certain factors that increase the risk of PAD in a person, some of them are- -
Smoking
Diabetes
High Cholesterol
Old Age
High levels of homocysteine
Most people with peripheral artery disease do not know that they have it because its symptoms are mostly unapparent. The most common sign of PAD is intermittent pain and cramps in the legs, called claudication. A person affected by PAD may experience pain in their thighs or calves while walking or climbing stairs. The exact location of the pain depends on the location of the blockage in the artery.
Some other possible symptoms of PAD are -

Leg weakness and numbness
Coldness in the lower leg or feet
Hair loss, slower hair and nail growth on legs
Shiny, pale skin on the legs
Sores, ulcers on the feet and legs that heal very slowly
